This Week at EPL: June 5-10

rubiks-cube-157058_1280.pngEckhart Public Library’s Eckhart Summer Read continues with gardening, hypertufa pots, and retro fun.

Gardening in the Teen Library’s Not-So-Secret Garden will get started on Tuesday, June 6, from 3-4 p.m. Teens in grades 6-12 can join us to water plants, do some weeding, harvest produce, and create some snacks using fresh garden ingredients.

Also on Tuesday, June 6, the library will hold a class on hypertufa. People can make a unique decorative pot out of hypertufa to add beauty to an outdoor or indoor space. All materials will be provided. Register by calling 260-925-2414 ext. 120 or emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us.

The Time Travelers History Camp, for elementary-aged children, will travel to the 1980s on June 5-9 from 1-3 p.m. in the Close Community Room. Educator Ryan Lengacher will lead children through the 1980s and beyond, including learning about the 1980s tech boom, toys and games from the era, and the Berlin Wall. Register by calling 925-2414 ext. 120 or emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us.

The 1980s retro fun will continue on Saturday, June 10, from noon to 4 p.m. with Tetris Day. Help Eckhart Public Library celebrate all things Tetris: play the classic NES game, make a Tetris magnet, and enjoy Tetris snacks. From 1-3 p.m., the documentary “The Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters” will be shown. No registration is required.

In addition to a variety of programs, classes, events, and activities, people of all ages can earn chances to win grand prizes by reading items checked out from Eckhart Public Library and researching at the Willennar Genealogy Center. Here’s what’s happening at Eckhart Public Library during the week of June 5-10:

  • Time Travelers History Camp: Time Travelers will be discovering the 1980s with Ryan Lengacher. Join Ryan to learn what was going on in national and local history during the 1980s. There will be games, activities, and fun! We will meet every day June 5-9 from 1-3 p.m. Register by calling 925-2414 ext. 120 or by emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us.   • Preschool Music and Movement: We will use movement to build our muscles, build rhythms and build friendships. Monday, June 5, 10:15-10:45 a.m., Close Community Room.
  • Play & Connect Summer Construction Zone: Join us each week this summer in our Play & Connect Construction Zone. Eckhart Public Library’s Play & Connect times are designed for children to interact with each other and engage in age-appropriate activities while adults supervise and socialize. Schedule a play date with your regular circle or expand your social network. You are welcome to come and go any time. Monday, June 5, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Neon Flix Tween/Teen Movie Club: This teen group writes, directs, and acts in original films, short stories and YouTube videos. New members are always welcome. Monday, June 5, 5-7 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Wee Reads – Build a Better World: This drop-in storytime is designed for children age birth to 2 years and their families. No registration required! Tuesday, June 6, 10:15-10:35 a.m., Secret Garden.
  • Pokémon Club for Tweens/Teens: People in grades 6-12 are invited to bring their cards every week and battle. Players go home with all of their cards, as trading is not encouraged. Tuesday, June 6, 12-3 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Books & Beyond Book Group: Call out to all children entering third and fourt grade who want to have fun this summer! Come join EPL’s new book group. We will meet on Tuesday afternoons this summer to discuss great books. You won’t want to miss the action this summer. Stop in to find out what we are all about. No registration required. Tuesday, June 6, 1-1:45 p.m., Secret Garden .
  • Yak, Snack, & Read Book Group: Calling all children entering 5th grade who want to be part of something bigger—join our summer book group! You will have the opportunity to share with others what you like to read, as well as offer ideas and suggestions for our book group. This is no ordinary book group; join us whenever it meets your schedule! No registration required. Tuesday, June 6, 2:30-3:15 p.m., Secret Garden.

  • Teens with Tools: Teens in grades 6-12 can join us to build a variety of items to be used around the Eckhart Public Library campus. Wednesday, June 7, 12-1:30 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Summer Pokémon Club: Do you love Pokémon? Children in grades 1-5 are welcome, and do not need to bring cards to enjoy all of our Pokémon-related activities. However, you are welcome to bring your cards and battle other enthusiasts. Participants go home with all their cards. Trading is not encouraged. Wednesday, June 7, 2-3 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Creative Writing Group: All writers 18 and older are encouraged to attend. Group members share their writing and participate in writing exercises. Wednesday, June 7, 6:30-8 p.m., JHG Room.
  • Eckhart Summer Read Family Programs – Cup Stacking with Jim Merrills: Join us on Thursdays at 10:15 for our Eckhart Summer Read Family Programs. All ages are welcome. Shortly after the program, lunch will be served free for children and at a small cost for adults in partnership with the Summer Food Service Program. Thursday, June 8, 10:15-11 a.m., Library Park.
  • STEAM Challenge: During each hands-on session we’ll explore the wonderful world of science, technology, and math. There will be reactions, explosions and fun for children through fifth grade. Thursday, June 8, 2-2:45 p.m., Secret Garden or Library Park.
  • Throwback Thursday: The Genealogy Staff will be joining the Teens every Thursday during the summer to see what new finds we have at the Genealogy Center. Pictures, documents, and other interesting items will be on display. Thursday, June 8, 3:30-4:30 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Art in Action: Children can join us this summer as we create artwork through the power of movement. We will stomp, walk, roll, and shake our way towards a masterpiece. Friday, June 9, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Library Park.
  • Magic: The Gathering at Teen: Magic: The Gathering enthusiasts in grades 6-12 can join us to play every Friday afternoon. Friday, June 9, 3-7 p.m., Teen Library.
