This Week at EPL – April 24-29

painting-911804_1920.jpgRegistration forms for the Friends of Eckhart Public art shows are now available.

Exhibits and registration will be received on Monday, May 8. The 50th Annual Art Show, 7th Annual Teen Art Show, and 5th Annual Children’s Art Show run Thursday, May 11, through Friday, May 19.

Entries must be an original work of art and produced within the last year. Classifications include oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolor, drawings, ceramics, sculpture, fibers, jewelry, black and white photography, color photography, stained glass, woodworking, and mixed media. Monetary prizes will be awarded in each category.

Artists who live or work in DeKalb, Noble, Steuben, and LaGrange counties are eligible for the Annual Art Show, while teens who live in DeKalb County or are enrolled at DeKalb Middle School or DeKalb High School for the 2016-2017 school year are eligible to participate in the Teen Art Show. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade who attend school or are eligible to attend school in DeKalb County may participate in the Children’s Art Show.

At Eckhart Public Library the week of April 24-29:

  • Teen Poetry Contest: April is National Poetry Month, and teens in grades 6-12 are invited to participate in our Teen Poetry Contest. Pieces can be submitted April 1st – 30th. All styles are welcome! First Prize: $50 Second Prize: $20 Third Prize: $10 Submissions can be emailed to teens@epl.lib.in.us or dropped off at The Teen Library.
  • Pizza & Paperbacks Teen Book Club: Stop by and enjoy some pizza while talking about a book at this teen book club! Monday, April 24, 5-6 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Teen Pokemon Club: Pokemon enthusiasts in grades 6-12 are invited to bring their cards to the Teen Library and battle. Participants will go home with all their cards, as trading is not encouraged. Tuesday, April 25, 4-5 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Drop-In Storytime Enrichment Class: Storytime Enrichment Classes are a fantastic opportunity for children to access a world of creativity and discovery. The library is proud to offer Storytime Enrichment Classes free of charge for the children and families in our community. Storytime Enrichment Classes are designed to help your child reach his or her full potential through stories, games, crafts, and activities that encourage early literacy skills. Tuesday, April 25, 6:30-7:15 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Wild Wednesday Adventure Club – Movie Makers: Students in first through fifth grade are invited to bring their imaginations and star in their very own movie! Wednesday, April 26, 4-4:45 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Super Happy Fun Time – Game On!: We will create our own version of ping pong using balloons and paper plates. Super Happy Fun Time is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Thursday, April 27, 4-4:45 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Better Off Read Book Club: This book club will read and discuss “Shakespeare Saved My Life: Ten Years in Solitary with the Bard” by Laura Bates. Books are available to check out at the Information Desk. Thursday, April 27, 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Jeremiah’s Brewed Awakenings.

  • Friday Magic – The Gathering: Fans of Magic: The Gathering are invited to gather and play. Friday, April 28, 5-6 p.m., Teen Library.
  • World Tai Chi Day: Join Sifu Greg Vick to celebrate World Tai Chi Day in the library park. In case of bad weather, we will celebrate in the Close Community Room. Saturday, April 29, 10-11 a.m., Library Park.
  • Play & Connect: Eckhart Public Library’s Play & Connect times are designed for children to interact with each other and engage in age appropriate activities while adults supervise and socialize. Schedule a play date with your regular circle or expand your social network. Activities are designed for all families and caregivers with children ages 5 and younger. Play & Connect is free and meets in the Secret Garden. You are welcome to come and go any time. Saturday, April 29, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Secret Garden.
