This Week at Eckhart Public Library – February 6-11

A LEGO contest for all ages, a hot chocolate bar, and retro toys are among the highlights planned for the Eckhart Winter Read Grand Finale on Saturday.

Everybody is invited to stop by the Grand Finale on Saturday, February 11, from 1-3 p.m. in the Close Community Room. There will be LEGOs available for an all-ages contest, with the winner to be chosen on social media during the week of February 13. The winner will receive LEGOs and a book of LEGO ideas. There will also be other retro toys to play with, including an Etch-A-Sketch, Slinky, and Game Boy.

Hot chocolate from Jeremiah’s Brewed Awakenings with a variety of toppings will be served.

The Grand Finale also coincides with the final day of the Friends of the Eckhart Public Library’s Love Your Library book sale. The book sale runs from Wednesday, February 8, through Saturday, February 11, at the Willennar Administrative Annex on Twelfth Street on the following schedule:

  • Wednesday, February 8, 4-6 p.m. – Friends members only, with memberships available at the door.
  • Thursday, February 9, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday, February 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, February 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – $2 per grocery style bag

Here’s what is happening around the library campus:

  • Pick up book club books: Books for adult book clubs are available to pick up at the Information Desk at the Main Library. Turn a Page with Anni will discuss “The Homecoming of Samuel Lake” by Jenny Wingfield on Wednesday, February 15, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Close Community Room. Better Off Read will discuss “The Underground Railroad” by Colson Whitehead on Thursday, February 16, at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Jeremiah’s Brewed Awakenings.
  • Neon Readers Teen Book Club: We will work on editing our movie and start planning the movie premiere. Monday, February 6, 5-7 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Valentines Creations at Teen: Stop by any time Teen is open and create some valentines for your family and friends. This program is brought to you by the Teen Advisory Board. Monday, February 6, through Tuesday, February 14, Teen Library.
  • Pokemon Club for Teens: Pokemon enthusiasts in grades 6-12 are invited to bring their cards to the Teen Library every Friday from 4-5 p.m. and battle. Participants will go home with all their cards, as trading is not encouraged.  Pokemon Club is free and no sign up is required. Tuesday, February 7, 4-5 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Cocoa & Canvas – Time Travel: Enjoy a warm beverage while completing a painting led by artists from The Window Nook Studio. Cost is free, but registration is limited to 25 people.   • Drop-In Storytime: Families are invited to join us for storytime fun! No registration required. Tuesday, February 7, 6:30-7:15 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Wild Wednesday Adventure Clubs – LEGO Club: We will learn the history of LEGOs, discover how they have changed throughout time and what has stayed the same. We will also find time for everyone to build with LEGOs. Wednesday, February 8, 4-4:45 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Friends of the Eckhart Public Library Book Sale: The Friends of the Eckhart Public Library will hold their annual Love Your Library book sale on February 8-11. Wednesday’s sale is for Friends members only, with memberships available at the door. Proceeds from the sale benefit library programs, events, and collections. Wednesday, February 8, 4-6 p.m., Willennar Administrative Annex.
  • Capturing Family History Through Images with Marcee Fisher: Marcee Fisher from The Studio on Main Street will be sharing tips on taking pictures of your loved ones and of DeKalb County sites. Learn how to capture your family history one image at a time. Wednesday, February 8, 6-7 p.m., Learning Lab at Willennar Genealogy Center.
  • Friends of the Eckhart Public Library Book Sale: The Friends of the Eckhart Public Library will hold their annual Love Your Library book sale on February 8-11. Proceeds from the sale benefit library programs, events, and collections. Thursday, February 9, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Willennar Administrative Annex.
  • Super Happy Fun Time – STEM Challenge: Can you build a vehicle that runs only on the power of a balloon? Super Happy Fun Time is for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Thursday, February 9, 4-4:45 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • FAFSA Workshop: Learn about the FAFSA and receive help in filling out this important component of student aid. Parents and students should bring their federal student aid ID, which can be applied for at fsaid.ed.gov; Social Security number; driver’s license number; Alien Registration number or permanent residence card if you are not a U.S. citizen; taxable income from 2015 W-2 or other record of money earned or received; untaxed income, including workers compensation, child support, housing, food, and other living allowances, and veterans benefits; 2015 federal income tax returns (IRS form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ); 2015 bank statements; and business and investment information, business and farm records, stocks, bond, and other investment records.   • Family Game Night: Stop in for some game time at the library! This drop-in family program is recommended for families with children ages 3 & up. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by a caregiver. Playing board games is shown to help children develop good character, problem solving and reasoning skills, sharing skills by taking turns, social skills, and language skills. Friday, February 10, 4-6 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Friday Magic at Teen: Magic: The Gathering fans are invited to play at the Teen Library on Fridays. No registration is required. Friday, February 10, 5-6 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Retro Game Night: Retro Game Night Returns! Join us for an hour of eight-bit awesomeness. Play favorite Nintendo and Super Nintendo games. Friday, February 10, 7-8 p.m., Close Community Room.
