This Week at Eckhart Public Library – August 8-13, 2016

Read a Romance Month Brochure

August is Read a Romance Month at Eckhart Public Library!

Every time you read a romance novel checked out from Eckhart Public Library, you can enter to win a Read a Romance Month prize pack. If you need help finding a romance novel, speak with a staff member.

Watch Eckhart Public Library’s Facebook and Instagram accounts for a Romance Cover Caption Contest as well. Weekly winners with the best captions will receive a copy of the book and a chocolate bar.

The library will also host two events for Read a Romance Month.

Eckhart Public Library will screen the documentary “Love Between the Covers,” followed by a Skype discussion with director Laurie Kahn, on Saturday, August 20, at 1 p.m. in the Close Community Room. The documentary follows the lives of five published romance authors – including Eloisa James, Beverly Jenkins, and Susan Donovan – and an unpublished newbie. The film’s description states, “Romance is the behemoth of the publishing industry; it outsells mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy combined. Yet no filmmaker has ever taken an honest look at the amazing global community that romance writers and readers have built. Until now.” Refreshments will be served. Register for the screening by calling 925-2414 ext. 120 or emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us.

The library will also host a Read a Romance Month Craft Night and Discussion on Tuesday, August 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the Close Community Room. Celebrate Read a Romance Month with romance novel cover crafts and book discussion. Make crafts with old-school romance covers while we discuss our favorite romance novels and love stories. There will be materials for crafts, or bring your own materials to make a variety of romance novel cover items.

  • Author Talk with James Kessler: DeKalb County native James S. Kessler will be at Eckhart Public Library to give a reading from his new book “Echoes of Empire: An Accidental Historian’s Journey through the Post-Ottoman World” and answer questions about his extensive travels. About the book: “There is no dearth of news, not always of the most cheerful sort, coming out of the broad geographic arc of the vast territory that once constituted the mighty Ottoman Empire. The Arab Spring continues to reshape regions, an economic crisis is tearing apart Greece, pirates off the Horn of Africa are terrorizing ships, and conflicts in the Caucasus and Balkans are simmering. In ‘Echoes of Empire: An Accidental Historian’s Journey through the Post-Ottoman World,’ James S. Kessler chronicles his travels through a dizzying array of cultures, religions, languages, and political systems found within many of the former Ottoman Empire’s possessions in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Drawing upon his experience as a historian and educator, Kessler explores how the shared Ottoman past-and how that past is remembered-continues to play a role in the post-imperial present in the more than forty countries that constitute the post-Ottoman world.” Register for this talk by calling 925-2414 ext. 120 or emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us. Thursday, August 11, 6:30-8 p.m., Close Community Room.

About Jenny

I am the Associate Director of Eckhart Public Library. My office is in the Administrative Annex, but I can often be found roaming the Eckhart Public Library Campus, performing acts of librarianship in every department! I love to read and learn about history. I'm also a huge fan of movies, TV and pop culture in general, and I love to read books of all types. Currently, I'm working my way around the romance section, with some historical fiction and graphic novels thrown in for variety! But you never know what I'm going to pick up next.
