Spring Break – Throwback Style!

Eckhart Public Library will be holding a huge variety of fun activities for Spring Break, March 21-25!

This year, our Spring Break theme is Throwback! Each day, we will be celebrating decades-gone-by!

No library card is necessary to participate in these fun activities!

Here’s what’s happening around the library campus:

  • Spring Break in the Children’s Department – The ‘10s: Drop in the Secret Garden to build with some old fashioned construction toys, Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys. Monday, March 21, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Children’s Department.
  • Spring Break at Teen – The ‘10s, Oreo Time: It’s Oreo Time! The Oreo was invented in the 1910s, come see what you can create with them (while supplies last). Monday, March 21, 12-8 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Neon Readers Teen Book Club: We will discuss the books we are currently reading and then we will some no bake cookies. Monday, March 21, 5-7 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Spring Break in the Children’s Department – the ‘20s & ‘30s, Popcorn and a Movie: We will be viewing Disney’s first full length animated feature released in 1937, “Snow White,” and eating popcorn. Tuesday, March 22, noon, Children’s Department.
  • Spring Break at Teen – The ‘20s & ‘30s, Games from the 1920s-30s: Play a game or two of horse shoes, Monopoly, Sorry, Scrabble, hopscotch, and more. Tuesday, March 22, 12-8 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Afternoon Tea: Enjoy an afternoon tea befitting Lady Grantham. Learn about the history of this customary British meal while enjoying sweets and savories. Please register by March 19th to ensure a spot. Register at the Information Desk, by calling 925-2414 ext. 120, or by emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us. Tuesday, March 22, 2-3 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Throwback Storytime – Spring Break in the Children’s Department: This Throwback Storytime will focus on stories from before the 1950’s. No registration required, all ages welcome. Tuesday, March 22, 6-6:45 p.m., Children’s Department.
  • Friends of the Eckhart Public Library Annual Meeting: Local violinist and music instructor Linda Kummernuss will be playing a selection of violin music that was uncovered in the John Martin Smith Collection. The music, which was handwritten in 1880, appears to have been composed for the M. K. Houlton Circus, which was based in DeKalb County from 1880-1893. Genealogy Assistant Chelsea Molin will give a brief presentation on Houlton, his family, and his circus. The event also includes a business meeting, including the election of officers. Tuesday, March 22, 6:30-8 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Creative Writing Group: All writers 18 and older, no matter what genre, are encouraged to attend. Group members share their writing and participate in writing exercises. Tuesday, March 22, 6:30-8 p.m., JHG Room.
  • Spring Break in the Children’s Department – the ‘40s and ‘50s, Play-Doh Palooza: The ‘50s gave us both Play-Doh and Gumby. Stop in and create your own Play-Doh character. Wednesday, March 23, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Children’s Department.
  • Spring Break at Teen – the ‘40s & ‘50s, Games of Your Imagination: Experience the rationing of the 40’s and 50’s by creating your own fun and games. Wednesday, March 23, 12-8 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Ration Book Cookery and Victory Gardens: Learn to make tasty dishes using authentic WWII-era recipes from ration cookbooks and plant a few seeds to start your own Victory Gardens. Please register by March 19th to ensure a spot. Register at the Information Desk, by calling 925-2414 ext. 120, or by emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us. Wednesday, March 23, 1-2:30 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Women’s History Month – Bonnell Souder: March is Women’s History Month and the Genealogy Center will be celebrating by looking at the life of Bonnell Souder, one of the early female doctors of DeKalb County. Register by calling 925-2414 ext. 420 or emailing genealogy@epl.lib.in.us. Wednesday, March 23, 6-7 p.m., Learning Lab at Willennar Genealogy Center.
  • Throwback Storytime – Spring Break in the Children’s Department: This Throwback Storytime will focus on stories from after the 1950’s. No registration required, all ages welcome. Thursday, March 24, 10:15-11 a.m., Children’s Department.
  • Spring Break at the Children’s Department – the ‘60s and ‘70s, Pet Rock Painting: The biggest craze of the ‘70s is back! Make a pet rock. Thursday, March 24, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Children’s Department.
  • Spring Break at Teen – the ‘60s & ‘70s, Pet Rock Painting: The biggest craze of the ‘70s is back! Make a pet rock. Thursday, March 24, 12-8 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Tie-Dye!: Make groovy, colorful creations using tie-dye techniques. We recommend participants bring a clean, natural fiber piece of clothing to tie-dye, though limited quantities of white t-shirts are available. Participants are encouraged to wear old clothes. Please register by March 19. Register at the Information Desk, by calling 925-2414 ext. 120, or by emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us. This program is open to all ages, but children under 10 must have an adult caregiver with them. Thursday, March 24, 6-7 p.m., outdoor. (The Close Community Room will be used in case of inclement weather.)
  • Spring Break at the Children’s Department – ‘80s and ‘90s, Color Creations: Drop in to color a character from your parents’ childhood memories. Friday, March 25, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Children’s Department.
  • Like, Totally Awesome Crafts: Make storage containers and accessories from old VHS and cassette cases. Friday, March 25, 1-2:30 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break at Teen – the ‘80s & ‘90s, Fashion: Big hair, big make-up, and big shoulder pads, come see what all the fuss was about. Friday, March 25, 5-7 p.m., Teen Library.
  • TGIF ‘80s & ‘90s Party: Relive the totally tubular ‘80s and ‘90s with the appropriate music, games, and television. There will be prizes for the winners and pizza and soda for all! Registration is recommended by March 23 to ensure that we have enough pizza for everyone. (There will be meatless options for those abstaining.) Register at the Information Desk, by calling 925-2414 ext. 120, or by emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us. Friday, March 25, 7-8 p.m., Learning Lab at Willennar Genealogy Center.

My office is in the Administrative Annex, but I can often be found roaming the Eckhart Public Library Campus, performing acts of librarianship in every department!
