This Week at Eckhart Public Library: March 23-28 (Spring Break)

Don’t have big spring break travel plans? No problem – come in to Eckhart Public Library all week for fun activities for all ages!

Here’s what’s happening this week:

  • March Madness: Eckhart Public Library invites you to make your picks – for best book. You can cast your vote for the best fiction and nonfiction of the year. Keep coming back to vote each week through April 4, as titles are eliminated. Ballots will go into a drawing for a $25 Barnes and Noble gift certificate. The winner will be notified Monday, April 6.
  • Spring Break Space Day – Explore the Final Frontier: Check out NASA’s live feed and breathtaking pictures of space. Monday, March 23, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Space Day – Let’s Make Some Aliens: Make aliens out of recycled materials. For teens in grades 6-12. Monday, March 23, 12:30-7:30 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Spring Break Space Day – Fabric of the Cosmos: Get a closer look at our elegant universe with this documentary. Monday, March 23, 2-4 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Space Day – Science Fiction movie: Attendees can pick a sci-fi movie to watch. Monday, March 23, 4-6:30 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Space Day – Explore the Stars: See the stars in library park, with help from tablet computers. Monday, March 23, 6:30-8 p.m., Library Park.
  • Spring Break Beach Day – Beach Paradise & Sandcastle Contest: Drop in to enjoy tropical beverages, beach sounds, and playing in the sand. Build a sandcastle for a chance to win a library beach bag. Tuesday, March 24, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Beach Day – Busy Builders: Build with LEGOs, K’NEX, Lincoln Logs, Duplo Blocks, Mega Blocks, & Better Blocks. For families with children age 3 through fifth grade; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Tuesday, March 24, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Secret Garden.
  • Spring Break Beach Day – Seashell Art: Make seashell art using seashells, glue, and other materials. For teens in grades 6-12. Tuesday, March 24, 12:30-7:30 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Writing Group: All writers, no matter what genre, are encouraged to attend. Group members share their writing and participate in writing exercises. This group is for adults 18 and above. Tuesday, March 24, 6:30-8 p.m.
  • Spring Break Time Travel Day – Historical Fiction Lunch: Bring your lunch and talk about what makes great historical fiction, and share your favorite historical fiction titles. Wednesday, March 25, 12-1 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Time Travel Day – Family History Boot Camp for Kids: Learn to start researching your family history and find your family’s claim to fame. Register by calling the Willennar Genealogy Center at 925-2414 ext. 420 or emailing genealogy@epl.lib.in.us. For children in grades 1-5. Wednesday, March 25, 2-4 p.m., Willennar Genealogy Center.
  • Spring Break Time Travel Day – Time Travel Movies: Watch a movie about time travel. Wednesday, March 25, 5-7 p.m., Close Community Room & Teen Library.
  • Spring Break Art Gallery Day – Art Tours: Take a virtual trip through the Louvre and other art galleries. Thursday, March 26, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Art Gallery Day – Cookies & Canvas: Explore Kandinsky’s art and create your own masterpiece. Cookies will be served. For children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Thursday, March 26, 10:30-11:30 a.m., Secret Garden.
  • Spring Break Art Gallery Day – Create-Your-Own Art: Materials will be available to create your own masterpieces. Thursday, March 26, 12-4 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Art Gallery Day – Teen Art: Materials will be available for you to make your own art pieces. For teens in grades 6-12. Thursday, March 26, 12:30-7:30 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Tabletop Game Night: Enjoy board games, tile games, and card games. Bring your favorite games, or play one of the provided games. Thursday, March 26, 6-8 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Staycation Day – Green Beauty Treatments: Transform your home into a spa with simple beauty and relaxation treatments, and make a facial or body scrub or mask. Recommended for ages 10 and older. Register by calling 925-2414 ext. 120 or emailing reference@epl.lib.in.us. Friday, March 27, 12-1 p.m., Close Community Room.
  • Spring Break Staycation Day – Teen Game Day: Play board games and Wii games with friends. For teens in grades 6-12. Friday, March 27, 12:30-7:30 p.m., Teen Library.
  • Spring Break Staycation Day – Be A Tourist In DeKalb County: Learn about fun, historical activities to do in Auburn and DeKalb County. Register by calling the Willennar Genealogy Center at 925-2414 ext. 420 or emailing genealogy@epl.lib.in.us. Friday, March 27, 2-3 p.m., Willennar Genealogy Center.
  • Spring Break Staycation Day – Family Movie Day: Watch “Big Hero 6” and eat popcorn. For children through fifth grade; children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Friday, March 27, 4-6:30 p.m., Secret Garden.

I am the Associate Director of Eckhart Public Library. My office is in the Administrative Annex, but I can often be found roaming the Eckhart Public Library Campus, performing acts of librarianship in every department! I love to read and learn about history. I'm also a huge fan of movies, TV and pop culture in general, and I love to read books of all types. Currently, I'm working my way around the romance section, with some historical fiction and graphic novels thrown in for variety! But you never know what I'm going to pick up next.
