History of DeKalb County Fair on Display September 17

Excited for Fair Week? Come join us for a presentation on the history of the DeKalb County Fair! Learn about DeKalb County’s earliest fairs, find out how the current Free Fall Fair started, and take a look at photos, post cards, and ribbons from past fairs.

On Wednesday, September 17, the staff of Willennar Genealogy Center: A Service of Eckhart Public Library will give a presentation on the history of the DeKalb County Fair through the lens of the John Martin Smith Collection. The event will run from 6pm to 7:30pm at the restored Sinclair Station on N. Main Street.

Genealogy assistant Mike Mapes and genealogy intern Chelsea Molin will give a presentation at 6pm. There will be time after the talk to look through a display on fair history.

We’re very excited to share this local history with the community. We hope you’ll join us!

Pieces featured in the presentation are all from the John Martin Smith Collection, which contains many items of local, state, and national significance. The Smith family has generously given Eckhart Public Library digitization rights to the collection.

About Jenny

I am the Associate Director of Eckhart Public Library. My office is in the Administrative Annex, but I can often be found roaming the Eckhart Public Library Campus, performing acts of librarianship in every department! I love to read and learn about history. I'm also a huge fan of movies, TV and pop culture in general, and I love to read books of all types. Currently, I'm working my way around the romance section, with some historical fiction and graphic novels thrown in for variety! But you never know what I'm going to pick up next.
